Artist statement
With a focus in fine art painting and drawing, my practice also extends into photography and mixed media, allowing me to explore diverse methods of visual storytelling. I have acquired traditional Eastern painting techniques, which provide a strong technical foundation, and I integrate them into contemporary painting to create a dialogue between past and present artistic methodologies. By combining these methods with Western painting approaches, I aim to construct a visual language that merges tradition and modernity. Through this fusion, I explore how historical artistic practices, when adapted to a contemporary context, can challenge conventional artistic boundaries and inspire innovative visual expressions, fostering a deeper
connection between past influences and modern sensibilities.
In my work, I am particularly interested in the symbolic and emotional power of color and form. I explore how different hues, textures, and compositions evoke personal and collective memories while reflecting cultural transitions. For instance, in my paintings, I layer transparent materials
and use color contrasts to create depth and movement, emphasizing the fluidity between tradition and innovation. My practice is rooted in the historical context of Eastern ink-wash techniques and Western abstract expressionism, merging gestural brushstrokes with structured compositions
to establish a dynamic yet introspective visual language.
Photography serves as another essential medium in my practice, complementing my exploration of color and form. I focus on capturing portraits and landscapes in bright daylight, drawn to pastel tones that enhance emotional resonance. Post-processing plays a crucial role in my approach, as I refine colors and adjust lighting to reinforce the atmosphere I seek to convey, evoking a particular mood and enhancing the emotional depth of the image. Just as I use color in painting to express emotions, I view photography as a process of constructing my own visual identity. The connection between my painting and photography lies in my deliberate use of color, layering, and composition to narrate both personal and shared experiences.
Through the integration of these artistic approaches, my work invites viewers to engage with the intersection of tradition and contemporary perspectives by encouraging reflection on the evolution of artistic language and its relevance in modern visual culture. By examining materiality, color, and historical influences, I seek to challenge conventional boundaries and offer new ways of experiencing visual narratives.
